Stone Spray: Solar powered 3D printer produces buildings from sand

Gone are the days when printers were only used to keep a hard copy of your documents or print your favorite photos. Today printers are being used to produce everything from lighting devices to solar panels. With recent advancements in 3D printing technology, printers can now produce usable objects too. The Stone Spray could well be the most advanced 3D printer, and is eco friendly too since it makes use of solar energy.

Developed by a team of researchers at the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, the solar powered “Stone Spray” is still in its infancy, but still shows great potential for printing eco friendly structures. The robot makes use of sand collected on-site and mixes it with a LEED-certified binder. It then sprays the mix onto a surface where it solidified as the machine progresses, creating beautiful forms.

Controlled by a computer, this 3D printer has the ability to print in multiple directions across the vertical and the horizontal plane, allowing it to create everything from furniture items to load bearing walls.
