India is currently the second largest food producer in the world, however, about 40 percent of the harvest is lost due to spoilage resulting from the lack of adequate facilities to store and transport food. Scientists at University of Cincinnati have now come to help with an innovative food storage unit that runs on renewable solar energy.
Dubbed the SolerCool, the container features a solar panel-covered roof that supplies energy to the cooler inside. The system can also store energy to provide a cool transport of food items even after dark. Food production industry in India is worth $180 billion, but with billions of dollars of food being wasted due to spoilage, systems such as SolerCool are definitely worth the investment.
