Scientists create neurons from kidney cells in urine

Urine has proved to be a very versatile material and topic of discussion for researchers all over the globe. While some use it to produce electricity, a research team from the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health in China, have now claimed to have created fully functional neurons form urine.

The scientists took kidney epithelial cells, present in urine, and converted them into pluripotent stem cells, which can then be coaxed to grow into any kind of human tissue in just 12 days. Converting them into neutrons took a little longer, but after four weeks of processing, scientists were able to grow fully functional and entirely stable neurons, which when transplanted in rat brains, didn’t cause any problems and functioned as they should have.

The research could open new doors for regenerative medicine, without the need to use the controversial embryonic stem cells and without extracting any tissue of blood samples from the patient’s body.
