Last year’s devastating 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, not only brought bad news for the local residents but also leveled the city’s main shopping mall. In an effort to stabilize the economy midst of the crisis, architect Anton Tritt has developed a make-shift shopping mall using only shipping containers.
Dubbed the Re:START Pop-up Mall, the shipping container shopping center now offers a place for pre-quake businesses, international brands and for start-ups too. After its launch, the mall got quite popular and currently provides commercial space to over 30 retailers. Shipping containers made the mall strong and durable, while also ensuring that the place can be dismantled and reused at some other site. According to the agreements, the shopping mall is expected to be dismantled shortly after Easter of next year.
