We don’t often see two eco friendly technologies working in tandem, but that’s what is happening in Phoenix where SunPower Corp has developed a 7.5MW solar PV system to power the Lake Pleasant Water Treatment Plant. The installation will help generate about 70 percent of the total energy needs of the treatment plant.
The solar installation, which makes use of 22,936 photovoltaic panels will help save the water treatment plant about $4 million over the 20 years, the solar system is expected to serve, while also saving about 15 million kWh of electricity annually. With over 300 days of sunshine in a year, Phoenix is a location ideal for setting up photovoltaic solar energy generating systems.
PV Magazine notes that at the treatment plant, SunPower’s To Tracker system has been employed which precisely positions the solar panels according to the sun’s movement during the day to better output by as much as 25 percent.
